How to send a group message in Messenger from your mobile device

I was unable to attend the opening of an exhibition in which two of my college lecturers were exhibiting. When I discovered several of my fellow graduates had also missed it, I created a group chat to organise a trip to Melbourne to see the exhibition together.

Some people in the group were impressed that I knew how to use the app in this way as they didn’t. That inspired my blog post for this week.

iPhone Instructions

1. Open Messenger.
2. Select the ‘write a message’ icon in the top right corner of the screen above your contact list.
3. Click Group, found in the same place. That will bring up a window that asks you to ‘Name this group chat’.
4. Name your group chat. (For our exhibition excursion I named the group with the gallery name, day and date of our outing.)
5. Click the camera symbol if you want to add an image. You can take a new photo, use one from your iPhone or search the web to find an appropriate picture.
6. Then select people to be in your group. You can select them from your contact list. If you can’t see them on your screen, start to type their name to make their name appear.
7. When you have completed your list, click Create.

Now you are ready to type a message that all the group will receive.

iPad Instructions

1. Open Messenger.
2. Select the ‘write a message’ icon in the top right corner of the area above your contact list.
3. Click New Group – found in the top right corner. That will bring up a window that asks you to ‘Name this group chat’.
4. Name your group chat.
5. Click the camera symbol if you want to add an image. You can take a new photo, use one from your iPad or search the web to find an appropriate picture.
6. Select people to be in your group. You can select them from your contact list. If you can’t see them on your screen, start to type their name to make their name appear.
7. When you have completed your list, click Create.

Now you are ready to type a message. Each person in the group will receive your message and be able to see all the comments, which is important to keep in mind.
No one wants to be inundated with messages and, of course, it pays to be diplomatic and try not to be ambiguous in any online communication.

People have the option to leave the group at any time by clicking on the More button and selecting Leave Group. This is useful for people when the content is no longer relevant to them.

In case you are curious about the art exhibition. It is 5 containing work by cathy-drummond-bill-hay-kristen-headlam-philip-faulks-richard-stringer. Here’s a link to the gallery 45 Downstairs.
